I've always liked Chris Ware. Ever since i bought a hardback copy of 'Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid On Earth' while i was at uni and used it as a skinning up tray for years afterwards. Naturally if you make zoots on a comic book you end up reading it over and over while high and i think it's fair to say it stood up well. Chris's books are always beautifully presented with great sleeves and fine typography. And that's even before you open them up and discover the world of cleanly designed and dense comics he creates. Not to menion the dejected, awkward, occasionally funny characters that inhabt them. Also worthy of note are his parodic adverts and paper cut-out works which are guaranteed to raise a smile. It's possible his work appeals to me because as he says "I try to use the rules of typography to govern the way that I draw" which is something i often find myself doing. In short, this multiple Eisner and Harvey award-winning cartoonist is ingenious, poignant and straight-up brilliant.
